Experience as a teacher on Silver Island
'I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit' - John Steinbeck
A new year a New You - 4 important reasons for going on a yoga retreat!
A very good reason to start with, is the importance of a Digital Detox! We are so used to carrying around a small, hand-held computer device in our hand on a daily basis that we feel naked without these tools for social networking, news updates and means to do business.
Silver Island and Shelf Making
Every now and then it is good to do something out of one’s comfort zone. So with that mantra in mind this year I did just that. My sister had mentioned going to pick olives on Silver Island in Greece. Helena, our Acupuncturist here in Ananda Centre, is good friends with the owners. So it was out of my comfort zone but not totally scarey!
I was quite excited to learn that we had a resident seal living around the island when I first arrived in 2012. Keen on making him part of the family I felt that naming him would be the next logical step and why not introduce a bit of my own language in my new foreign home. With more than enough water for the christening I named him ROB (the Afrikaans word for a seal). There was no objections from the bench so ROB was henceforth to be called ROB.
A free range boat!
Getting up at the crack of dawn on the day we need to do our weekly trip to town has become the norm. The reason for this being that the weather turns at mid day, and the trip back to Silver Island can change into an experience that will make Bear Grylls miss his mother.
The birth of Silver Island Yoga
Silver Island has always held a very special place in my heart. As a young girl, our family would spend long wonderful summers on the island. Thinking back, my memories are ones of absolute freedom, the engulfing sound of thousands of united cicadas, the silky feel of the turquoise sea with the golden sun on my skin, the feeling of never wanting to leave and the tears that fell when we got on the boat and waved good bye.
